As the excitement builds ahead of the 149th running of the Black-Eyed Susan this Saturday we take a deeper look at how many past Preakness jockey winners are getting the leg-up in this year’s Pimlico race and their big-race stats.
Preakness Jockey Winners Record – Meet The Eight Pimlico Riders
This Saturday’s Preakness Stakes will see eight horses trying and land the 149th running of the Black-Eyed Susan and much of the focus will be on the Kentucky Derby winner – Mystik Dan, who is the favorite with the best Preakness Stakes racebooks 2024.
Therefore, we’ll also see eight Preakness jockeys in the race as they try to cement their names into US horse racing folklore.

Just TWO Previous Preakness Jockey Winners In The 2024 Line-up
The table above tells us there are just TWO past Preakness jockey winners in the class of 2024 – Tyler Gaffalione and Flavien Prat.
Tyler Gaffalione, who rides Tuscan Gold on Saturday, won the Preakness Stakes on his debut ride in 2019 on the Mark E. Casse-trained War Of The Will.
While Flavien Prat’s Preakness Stakes win also came on his first ride in the race, when he steered home Rombauer in 2021. Prat will ride Kentucky Derby fourth Catching Freedom as he looks to maintain his 100% strike-rate.
Frankie Dettori and Jaime A Torres Are Making Their Preakness Debuts
Looking at the past Preakness Stakes winners this also showcases that this year we’ve two jockeys making their debuts in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
Multiple Grade One winning jockey Frankie Dettori famously make a retirement U-turn at the end of 2023 and is now based in the US. Dettori also rode in the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, but only managed 16th that day on Society Man.
Dettori has been booked to ride the last of the Bob Baffert Preakness horses in the race – Imagination – as the hall-of-fame handler looks to win this Triple Crown race for a ninth time.
Jaime A Torres is the other Preakness jockey riding in the race for the first time.
The Puerto Rico-born pilot will be the youngest jockey in the race this year and gets his first taste of the Pimlico action on Seize The Grey for veteran six-time Preakness Stakes winning trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
Joel Rosario Is The Most Experienced Preakness Jockey With 9 Past Appearances (But No Wins)
With nine past rides in the Preakness Stakes, jockey Joel Rosario is the most experienced in the 2024 field – however, he’s yet to win the Black-Eyed Susans.
The 39 year-old jockey has hit the bar a few times though – with no fewer than FOUR silver medals in the Preakness Stakes.
Joel Rosario will be hoping to break his duck on the D Wayne Lukas runner Just Steel and the good news for his backers is the horse’s only two career wins have been when Rosario has been doing the steering.
The 2024 Preakness Jockeys Have 26 Past Appearances Between Them
When looking at the Preakness jockeys winners list – in total the eight pilots riding in 2024 have notched up 26 appearances between them.
But with only two winners this works out at just an 8% return.

Has ridden over 2,300 winners to date and will be hoping to add to those on the Chad Brown-trained Tuscan Gold, who was third in the Louisiana Derby in his last race. The Preakness Stakes, however, has so far eluded Rosario from his nine past rides in the Pimlico race – four seconds.
