Muth Horse Profile Ahead Of 2024 Preakness Stakes Run

Muth Horse

Horse racing fans and bettors should study the Muth horse profile in the build-up to the Preakness Stake for a very good reason. The Bob Baffert runner WAS the one to beat ahead of the May 18 Pimlico race with the leading US racebooks – but will now MISS the race due to a high temperature.

However, despite being scratched from the race Muth might be a horse not every racing fan is familiar with. So, let’s fill in some gaps and tell you a bit more about this year’s Arkansas Derby winner and where the Bob Baffert runner run next.

Muth WAS The Horse Hoping To Give Trainer Bob Baffert His Nineth Preakness Stakes Win

As the build-up to the middle leg of the Triple Crown series continues, the Preakness Stakes odds tell us Muth WAS the horse all the others have to beat. However, having travelled over from the Baffert barn he was found to have a high temperature and will now MISS THE RACE.

Muth silks This Good Magic colt was trading odds-on with most of the best US racebooks and it wasn’t hard to see why.

The first plus in Muth’s corner was that he would have headed to the Preakness Stakes fresher than most after not running in the Kentucky Derby (more on that below). Having been seen last on March 30 winning the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Therefore, this Zedan Racing Stables-owned 3 year-old has had around six week to freshen up as he looks to add to the $1.5m prize haul he’s already racked up.

Muth would have also been representing last year’s Preakness winning trainer Bob Baffert, who is the winning-most barn in the history of this Pimlico contest.

Baffert has mopped up eight Black-Eyed Susan wins over his career, including Triple Crown winners Justify (2018) and American Pharoah (2015). While last year his National Treasure scrapped home by a head under jockey John R. Velazquez to take his tally to eight.

The good news for Baffert is that he still has the Frankie Dettori-ridden Imagination in the Preakness Stakes.

  • 2018: Justify
  • 2015: American Pharoah

  • 2002: War Emblem
  • 2001: Point Given
  • 1998: Real Quiet
  • 1997: Silver Charm

Muth Beat Kentucky Derby Winner Mystik Dan In The Arkansas Derby This Season

Another reason Muth was figuring high up the list with the best Preakness Stakes racebooks that that he actually trounced the 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan in his last race.

That success came in the Arkansas Derby on March 30 at Oaklawn Park (watch below), where he had the recent Run For The Roses winner, Mystik Dan, just over 6 lengths back in third.

Muth also beat another Kentucky Derby runner, Just Steel, into second that day and in the process recorded his fourth and biggest career win to date.

Who Was The Last Arkansas Derby Winner To Land The Preakness Stakes?

The 2023 Arkansas Derby winner Angel Of Empire went onto run a fine third in the Kentucky Derby and also ended fourth in the Belmont Stakes but bypassed the Preakness Stakes.

So, this means we have to go back further to find the last Arkansas Derby winner that was also one of the past Preakness Stakes winners.

Step forward – American Pharoah, who won both races in 2015. Also trained by Muth’s handler Bob Baffert, he won the Triple Crown that year too.

Prior to 2015, you have to go back to 2007 when Curlin won the Arkansas Derby before adding the Preakness Stakes the following month.

Afleet Alex (2005) and Smarty Jones (2004) are two other big names to have done the double this century.

Zedan Racing Stables, Inc. Looking For First Preakness Stakes Win

The famous red, white and light blue racing silks of Zedan Racing Stables, Inc. have been responsible for some big horses in recent years.

These include Grade One winners, Taiba, Medina Spirit, Arabian Knight, Princess Noor and Arabian Lion. However, none managed to win the Preakness Stakes.

Looking back at the Preakness Stakes results, Medina Spirit did manage to take the bronze in 2021. So, they will be hoping to go two places better in 2024 with Muth and win this middle leg of the Triple Crown for the first time.

However, with Muth now NOT running in the Preakness Stakes, Zedan Racing Stables will have to wait another year to try and get their first win in this Triple Crown race.

Why Did Muth Not Run In The Kentucky Derby?

Churchill Downs currently have a trainer ban on Bob Baffert, which restricts him from running any of his horses at the track.

This ban began in 2021 when Baffert was suspended for two years after his Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drugs test and was later disqualified.

The shackles were meant to come off in 2023, but Churchill Downs extended the ban into 2024 – meaning Bob Baffert is still not allowed to have runners at the track.

Which, of course, includes the most famous race in the US – the Kentucky Derby.

Muth’s Next Race: What’s Next For Scratched Preakness Runner?

Providing Muth’s temperature comes down before the Belmont Stakes on June 8, then this final Triple Crown race could be his next target.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes is being run at Saratoga due to the continues construction work at Belmont Park.

While Muth’s trainer Bob Baffert has won the Belmont Stakes three times – 2001: Point Given, 2015: American Pharoah and 2018: Justify.

Muth Horse Pedigree

Muth also has a solid pedigree, with his sire the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic, who also won the Grade One Haskell Invitational Stakes and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes in his career. Good Magic also finished fourth in the 2018 Preakness Stakes, so Muth will be hoping to improve on his dad’s finish in the 2024 renewal on May 18.

The dam side is slightly less impressive with Hoppa only racing three times and winning once (Maiden Special Weight). However, Hoppa’s sire was another Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, Uncle Mo, which adds a bit more weight.

Bob Baffert’s Muth also ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, when second to Fierceness in 2023, so this race seems to run in the family.

  • Sire: Good Magic
  • Dam: Hoppa
  • Dam’s Sire: Uncle Mo
  • Breeder: Don Alberto Corporation
